Tengen allegedly violated that license as well as Nintendo's trademark and patent rights, by distributing unauthorized games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo's case will now proceed ahead to trial. In a related matter, the court set an early hearing on Nintendo's request to prohibit Atari Games and Tengen from distributing a "Tetris" cartridge for play on the Nintendo home video game system pending a full trial. The court also agreed to hear a similar cross-motion by Tengen. The hearing will be on June 15. The court declined to prohibit distribution of the game prior to the June 15 hearing. The product was engineered using object-oriented technology, which allows it to incorporate more features into less computer memory. Reflex 2.0 includes Borland's Virtual Real-time Object-Oriented Memory Manager. The new product was demonstrated publicly for the first time June 1 at a meeting of the Boston Computer Society. Reflex 2.0 offers several features not available in such competing products as Q&A and Professional File. These unique features include multiple views, "hot-linked" windows, interactive crosstabs, and built-in professional-quality graphics. A new Quick Report option uses the form or list views users have already designed. Additionally, Reflex's Report Writer allows spreadsheet users to set up reports on spreadsheet files that they import into Reflex. The report writer also features built-in support for constructing mailing labels. Reflex 2.0 makes form letters easy by offering a new Mail Merge View. Windowing capabilities let users work with several views all at the same time. They can keep one or all views in front of them, so information is constantly available. The views are "Hot Linked," so when a change is made in one view, it's reflected in the others. Reflex 2.0 now works in full color on EGA or VGA systems. Graphs can be printed on a wide variety of printers and plotters. Reflex incorporates the Borland Graphics Interface, the same graphics engine used in Borland's Paradox, Quattro, and Turbo Language products. Reflex 2.0 also has file compatibility with Paradox, Borland's high-end relational database management system. NEW STANDARD FOR COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE ----------------------- (BPS) -- Communications experts from across the nation recently published a proposal for a new set of standards to be known as the Call Data Standard (CDS). The people who developed CDS believe it will affect every program that uses a modem. Team leader Rob Rosenberger explained why CDS was developed. "A lot of people complain that they can't push a button to see their modem phone bill right on the screen. We got tired of the complaints and formed a team to tackle the problem." CDS is a standard way for modem programs to record what they do online. It also defines a standard format for storing telephone cost information. Rosenberger said some programs have a limited capability to do this, but "the data is stored in a proprietary format. CDS lets every program have access to it." CDS is little more than some file formats and guidelines on how to read and write them. One file holds details about your modem usage. Another file stores information about the cost to call various places. If you log onto a network like CompuServe or GEnie, you will be able to enter separate host service charges which apply to that particular number. Rosenberger is excited about CDS. "Some of the biggest names in communications software are hooked on it. CDS is going to change the way we look at modems." QUADRAM SELLS JT FAX LINE TO HAYES MICROCOMPUTER --------------------------- (BPS) -- the JT Fax line of PC facsimile products has been sold for an undisclosed dollar figure to Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc., according to Francis A. Marks, president of Quadram. The sale involves the rights to all fax products and tradenames, including the JT Fax trademark and intellectual property in connection with the JT Fax brand and private labeled PC facsimile products. Quadram and Hayes have outlined cooperative agreements to maximize the benefits of this transaction for the JT Fax customer.
